Market Overview
Galvanizing is one of the most widely used to methods for protecting metal from corrosion. It involves applying a thin coating of zinc to a thicker base metal, helping to shield it from the surrounding environment. Galvanized steel is a carbon steel that has been coated with zinc. The most common method of zinc coating is the hot-dip process. While this is the most common form of galvanization, it is often used for steel products that have previously been fabricated as the thickness of the final product is not easily controlled. Another method of the galvanization process is continuous galvanizing.
The hot-dip process consists of submerging the carbon steel into a molten zinc bath (approximately 680 degrees Fahrenheit). When the material is removed from the zinc bath and cooled a reaction to the oxygen in the air occurs. The reaction causes the zinc to become part of the steel (an iron-zinc alloy bond). The new surface finish appears to have a crystalline finish or spangled finish. Hot dip galvanizing provides unbeatable barrier protection for steel. It greatly reduces maintenance costs and ensures extended service life. In turn, this reduces energy and resource demands on the environment and offers a sustainable, 100% recyclable, environmentally-friendly solution.
Global galvanized steel market will grow at a CAGR of more than 5% by 2020. Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region in the galvanized steel market and is anticipated to occupy around 68% of the overall market revenue by 2020. The primary reason for this region’s growth is the high demand for galvanized steel flat-rolled products coming from the automobile and construction sectors. Moreover, with China being the largest producer of galvanized steel specially metal-coated steel sheets, will accelerate steel production in the region in the coming years.
