Competent cells incorporate foreign DNA through altered cell walls to pass DNA more easily. Calcium chloride and Heat shock treatment are used to make cell “competent”. Electroporation is a process that includes brief exposure of cells to an electric field in order to pass DNA through it. Bacterial culture has varies growth rate, in initial hours called lag phase with small number of dividing cells growth rate is low. In rapid growth phase also called Log phase under proper temperature cells can become competent easily.

Artificial competence includes setting specific artificial conditions in which cells are made permeable to DNA in laboratory. It is relatively easy competence procedure and can be used in the genetic engineering of bacteria. Artificial competence is low efficiency process as cells are forces to adopt foreign DNA.
