Cylinder liner or Cylinder sleeve is a cylindrical space fitted into an engine which allows piston to reciprocate very smoothly. It is one the most important part of engine as it gives friction and wear protective surface for piston and rings. Cylinder liner needs to be hard enough because of repeating friction caused with piston ring. If Cylinder liner use for longer service time generally 12000 hours at higher Revolutions per minute (RPM) could cause serious problem of wearing. Hence the environment in which the Cylinder liner materials will operate plays an important factor in determining the material performance requirements.
Cast Iron, Cast steel, Nickel CI, Nickel chrome CI are the most common used material in manufacturing of Cylinder liner. Material must deliver high resistance for heat, friction and vibrations. High temperatures and Corrosive environments, can hugely affect the performance of most materials used in manufacturing. Hardness ability of material helps to resist water and hence useful in Cylinder liner manufacturing but hard the material harder to machine it and it needs harder steel tools for shaping. Hence while production manufacturer must have to proportionate both properties of material.
Cylinder liner broadly divided into two categories as wet liner and dry liner. Main difference between two types is their contact with surface. Dry liner will contact directly with cylinder block and Wet liner will contact with coolant. Cylinder liners are most importantly used to form a sliding surface to transfer compress gas and heat. When designing wet cylinder liner important thing to consider is stiffness aspects of the material used. The most important aspect of both Cylinder liner are Less consumption of lubricant, Less wear on the cylinder liner itself, High anti-galling properties and Less wear on the associated piston ring.
On application side Cylinder liner are used in Gasoline engine and Diesel engine. Cast iron cylinder liners are mostly used in commercial vehicles like bus and trucks. Direct sliding motion of aluminum alloys has pitfalls of wear-resistance and deformation during operation. A cylinder wall in an engine is under high pressure as well as high temperature with the piston and piston rings sliding at high speeds. Hence quality of material performs important factor especially in Gasoline engine.
